Case 4. A 55 year old male who has type 1 diabetes and alcohol use disorder is admitted to the hospital for head trauma when he tripped during a drunken stupor. After three days in the hospital he developed a fever of 102oC with chills, a cough producing a current jelly-like sputum. Gram stain of the sputum revealed numerous PMNs, epithelial cells, gram-positive cocci, and gram-negative rods. Chest X-ray reveal abscess formation in posterior segments of the right upper lobe. The sample is from the sputum.
